Will and I ran the first 3 miles with Jade.  Will and I saw some interesting mushrooms.  They were flat, as big as my hand, and grew out from the bottom of a tree.  It looked like a very nice place for a big toad to sit.  Will enjoyed the entire run.  We loved  the temperature:  71 degrees.  Tomorrow morning it is suppose to be 48!  And Wednesday 39!  Winter is coming.

A couple questions:

1)  Is it healthy to run fast miles during a long run?

2)  What is a good winter training for me?

For the first time, I miss the mountains.

Will and I were taking a new way to the store.  I missed the exit.  As we drove on to the next exit, the rolling hills gave way to flat fields.  I looked to the left and was surprised not to see mountains.  I had forgotten I was in Iowa.  No mountains.  Just clouds.

I am grateful to be surrounded rolling hills and trees.  They are beautiful.  I love the fall colors especially the trees that turn red.  Without the hills and trees, I would miss the mountains even more.

Wow, mushrooms! That's not something we see here in Arizona very often! I miss seeing the leaves change, too (one of the few things I miss about Texas)-cactus (cacti?) don't have leaves-ha!

Anyway, I can answer your first question from experience. I think it is very beneficial to run fast miles during a long run. During marathon training, I always used to run the last 3 miles significantly faster than the rest, even if I'm running 20 miles. I worked up to a 9:00 pace for most of the run, and then speeding up to 8:00-8:30 for the last 3 miles. This teaches your body how to keep up the pace when you're tired. I had very good results training this way and felt very strong in the late stages of the marathons (well, not every marathon). My husband is doing portions of his long runs at race pace right now, and it's going well for him.

Regarding your second question, I've always lived in Texas or Arizona, so I'm not much help for winter training. But I've always preferred colder weather for training. Can you run in the middle of the day during the coldest months?

You continually amaze me that you do these incredible runs with a stroller!

Sounds like you sure have some great trails and routes out there. But I too would miss the mountains, not to mention that I'm totally disoriented withou them. I have no answers for your questions because I have little knowledge and too many that need answers of myself but whatever your doing is working for sure!

Oh by the way, I'm reading Inkheart it's a childrens book that my 10 yr old has read and she is now on the second in the series. She loves to read out loud to me, and as she has been reading I got intersted. She has been reading the second to me a lot, I try not to listen because I don't want it to spoil it for me. It's a fantasy that has some pretty good reviews so I'll let you know what I think!

I'm no training expert, but I think the best way to train through the winter is to start saving for a plane ticket to Utah to run the Painter's half marathon with Michelle & I (and who ever else we can get onboard) this January!

Once you reach a certain level of fitness, in my opinion a long run without some fast miles in the middle or towards the end is a wasted long run. I never go more than 15 miles without something fast in the middle.

Winter training should not be drastically different from summer training. You get out and do the miles. If anything, you do more miles during the winter because you do not usually have key races to taper for.

Christi, I have to disagree with you there. I think the PF Chang's Rock n Roll Marathon/Half Marathon is the place to be this January!

Good luck with your half marathon training!
